Chain of Command The Battaion deployed during March 1966 to the Republic of Vietnam as part of the Special Landing Force, and was redesignated 8 May 1966 as the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. It Participated in the War in Vietnam, March 1966 - April 1971, operating from; Rung Sat; Chu Sai; Que Son; Hieu Nhon; Phu Loc; Phu Bai; An Hoa; and DA Nang. It relocated during May 1971 to Camp Pendleton, California, and was deactivated 15 June 1974
