In Vietnam, he served as a CAP Marine. He was severely injured while removing "friendly" mines from the fields of fire of the CAP O-3 on 14 June 1967. Unfortunately, this was done without a map.
He lost an arm and both legs, and spent time at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital.
He returned to the Portland area and died of complications of diabetes and kidney failure in 1982 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Portland, Oregon. He was 33 years of age.
Craig was interred in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Oregon in Section C Site 1319.
