Sgt William W WOODS (MCSN: 285615) participated in offensive operations on Iwo Jima Island, Bonin “Volcano” Islands, as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division, FMF, In the Field from 19 February to 02 March, 1945 when he was killed in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Hill 362A and Nishi Ridge.

   
Comments/Citation:

In mid-1941, while serving with the USS Idaho (BB-42), he served with the Marine Detachment.  The Idaho served primarily with the Pacific Fleet, but on this occasion it joined other ships on Neutrality Patrols, protecting American shipping during the Battle of the Atlantic. When War broke out, the Idaho returned to the Pacific for amphicbious operations against the Japanese.

Notes:
Prior, to Sea School in San Diego.
Then aboard the USS Idaho (BB-42) in November 1940, rank of PFC, on Oahu.
In July 1942 at Newport, Rhode Island. 
Then in October 1941 was at Hvalfjordur, Iceland with Marine Detachment, USS Idaho on Neutrality Patrols during the Battle of the Atlantic.
January 1942, aboard the Idaho in the Pacific. Rank of PFC.

October 1942 to parachute training. From the USS Idaho in the Pacific.
July 1943, South Pacific with 3rd Parachute Battalion. rank of Sgt.

Served on Guadalcanal and Vella La Vella, Solomon Islands with 3rd Parachute Battalion, 1st Marine Parachute Regiment, FMF Demolition Platoon, Hq. Company. 1943-4.
