The National Order of the Republic of Vietnam was awarded to individuals who distinguished themselves with outstanding achievements, exceptional service, sacrifice, heroism, noble attitude, or extraordinary talent that reflect credit on, or was beneficial to, the country.
The order had five classes with conventional insignia and service ribbons with rosettes and stripes of gold and silver lace in the French manner. The ribbon is that of the former Order of the Green Dragon of Annam (France) and the green dragon is still present in the order's insignia.
