Reflections on Capt Port's
US Marine Corps Service
PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE MARINE CORPS.
When I joined, I only desired to be an 0311 and to go out and kill bad guys that threatened our country's freedom. There were no reasons such as "for the pay, for the benefits, for the education, etc." going through my mind. So, when I got three hots and a cot, I felt grateful. I knew in my heart that I owed our country a debt of gratitude and by serving her, it was the least that I could do to repay it.
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
I am a prior GySgt of Marines, (I started in the grunts). and have both made Marines as a Drill Instructor, and taken them to combat as a Commissioned Officer in charge of logistics. It has been a humbling experience.
IF YOU PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE WHICH MADE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOU AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY?
I did participate in combat operations. I went along with several convoy patrols, conducted some foot-patrol operations with the grunts.I have been in direct contact and exchanged fire with the enemy and did this all while being a S-4 Alpha in the Battalion Four Shop.
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
Exchanging fire with the enemy while conducting a re-supply combat convoy operation.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
Having received a few awards, etc. I would definitely say that I am the most proud of my DI ribbon for successfully making it through the Drill Field. It was over three years of truly hard work that was both physically and emotionally demanding in comparison to any other award that I received. No doubt about it.
When you are driving into work at 0300 and you pull back into your driveway at 2200 for seven days a week for over three years (with minimal breaks), pulling 112-120 hour weeks, drinking coffee and downing up to 6 Monsters a day, chasing zit-faced young punks up and down stairs, back and forth from the sand-pit, for so many years, it makes you old fast.
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
We were led by out Battalion Commander, LtCol Ellison. He has been the greatest example to me of leadership. He is an example to all around him in every way, from police calling to assisting working parties. He has been one of the greatest positive impacts on me to this day.
CAN YOU RECOUNT A PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM YOUR SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MAKES YOU LAUGH?
Some of them would be my experience as a Drill Instructor. Like the time that one of my recruits broke a piece of Q-tip in his ear and it could not be retrieved. You should have seen his face.
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
I am a Logistics Officer for an Infantry Battalion right now.
WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS ARE YOU A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? WHAT SPECIFIC BENEFITS DO YOU DERIVE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIPS?
The Mustang Association because I was selected to receive the Mustang award at TBS.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
I have belonged to quite a few units now and I can tell you that I have not belonged to a better unit than Second Battalion, Sixth Marines. It has stretched me to my limits and I can now say that I have both seen and participated in combat action.
It has been a long, arduous ride in my beloved Corps and I would not trade it for the world. I have walked among great, strong and true giants that have been both combat tested and combat hardened. Each of the young Marines in my battalion have all of the respect in the world from me and I am so proud of them. They inspire me and I have purpose in my life to live it in such a way as to positively influence the youth and inspire those around me to the best of my ability. I wish to do this humbly and with a very blessed attitude.
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE MARINE CORPS?
Any advice that I would give to those who are still serving, is to continue the small disciplines that define our style and to wake up every day wondering what we can do to make a difference in a positive way.

IN WHAT WAYS HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM HELPED YOU REMEMBER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS YOU SERVED WITH.
I am grateful for Togetherweserved.com for the connections that I have been able to find with prior friends in the Corps and the new relationships that I can continue after we part. Now that I am in my fifteenth year of the Corps, I have grown up a bit, but still young and vibrant in soul. I wake up every day knowing that I am fortunate enough to wear the uniform another day and I have not taken it for granted either. If I had to sum up my experience in one sentence -- "Exciting, adventurous and I live knowing that I am blessed and genuinely grateful for the fact that I am truly a man "living the dream."
