Reflections on GySgt Alger,Jr's US Marine Corps Service

 Reflections On My Service

PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE MARINE CORPS.
I was not ready for college and my dad was a Marine and we have had military service on both sides of the family so joining the Marines was just expected.
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
I was a field radio operator with 1st Mar Regiment, 3/3, 2nd LAAM BN, then went on recruiting duty in Littleton, Co. After being promoted to SSgt I got stationed as Radio Chief for 1/9, 2/1 and then got transferred to El Toro to be an instructor at the SNCO Academy. After being promoted to GySgt I then got transferred to 1st Mar Div HQ Bn and served as COMM Chief for 1/12 and then back to HQ BN as PLRS PLT CMDR.
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
I really enjoyed the time on liberty on the Seychelles Islands and the opportunity to visit the ancient City of PETRA. Out of all the countries that I have been to these two stand out the most.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES YOU RECEIVED, OR OTHER MEMORABILIA, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU AND WHY?
My recruiting ribbon means the most because this is where I learned the life is about making a difference in people's lives. During my time on recruiting I was ale to really make a difference in some young peoples lives and as a result I am who I am today.
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
Paul Gray and Cheyenne Barnes. These two fellow Marines showed me that I could be a good Marine and a good Christian at the same time and they challenged me to study and never quit.
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
Once I retired I got into sales with VAL-PAK then worked for Eschelon Telcom, Integra Telcom in sales. I also worked for a Beka Book in the as a Home School Rep for AZ, NM, and Southern NV. I now work for theUniversity of Phoenix as a Military Enrollment Advisor helping our active duty, Reserve and National Guard veterans and their families use their benefits to earn their education.
IN WHAT WAYS HAS SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY YOU HAVE APPROACHED YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE SERVICE?
My service has laid a great foundation for me and my family to build on. The leadership, desision making skills and committment that I gained are an assest that has served me well ini the civilian sector and helped me instill those qualities in my kids.
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE MARINE CORPS?
Continue to do your best and use all the benefits that you have as once you are out many of those assests go away and you do not want to look back and say " I wish I would have...."
IN WHAT WAYS HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM HELPED YOU REMEMBER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND THE FRIENDS YOU SERVED WITH.
TWS has been a great tool to help me keep in touch and get back in touch with those that I served with.
