Reflections on Sgt Shaver's
US Marine Corps Service

|
TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, WHAT INFLUENCED HIS/HER DECISION TO JOIN THE MARINE CORPS?
The Streets of New York City & MY Father he was worst than any Drill Instructor could think of being.
|
TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH HE/SHE TOOK IN HIS/HER MILITARY SERVICE. WHERE DID THEY GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE THEY ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS HIS/HER REASON FOR LEAVING?
I was with the MAR.DET.London,England NAVACTSUK when I wanted to go to Viet Nam so I re-enlisted for 6 years so I could go, When first getting to Viet Nam I was with Hotel 2/3 up on the DMZ the worst part of H2/3 was I was FNG & a Sgt.plus coming from Guard Duty in London didn't HELP. It was that FNG doesn't KNOW SHIT!! Then I was at Camp Carroll on the DMZ & I was pick by 2 Officers from 4th.CAG to B a CAP-Leader U had to have 4mos.in the GRUNTS to B in CAP & more or less we had the same time in the bush After a short time the unit was ONE we all thought the same I wish I could say the same for the Popular Forces of Viet Nam. They DID NOT CARE who was INCHARGE VC, NVA THE SOUTH or US. The CAP Unit was the BEST Job I ever had!!!! The worst was after Viet Nam I went to I&I Duty in Albany,N.Y. I was an 0311 that's a GRUNT now I'm a Motor Transport Chief & Driver & don't have a Drivers Lic. Oh this is going to B fun Then are I&I got orders & we got one of the biggest ASSHOLEs in the Marine Corps everything went down hill from their in may of 1972 the I&I had REQUESTED ORDERS for me WE didn't PLAY WELL!! I was at home with the mover's packing my Household good's when the phone rang it was the First Sgt. He said while the Maj.& Gunny Robinson were at SUMMER CAMP they were both KILLED at about 0400 while they were driving a M141-A1they were hit by a Milk Tanker on Hwy 17 outside Camp Lejeune NC They were both DRUNK on their ass. Now this is where everybody gets to Dislike me I hated that Major I wished it on him every day of my life I miss Gunny Robinson every day of my life he was a Great Marine!!
