Currently RETIRED not only as a Chapter 61 Retiree but from the civilian world also. Came out too the wonderful world of GLOBAL ECONOMY. Could of got a job in my hometown anywhere before I went in now you can't buy a job. Came out and worked at FREEMAN SHOE closed and shutdown after 2 years. Went too UNVERISAL FOODS spent 12 years there, closed, shutdown and left for a non union workforce. Corporate America at its finest they want the BIG bucks but the workers don't deserve middle class wages. Went too OUTBOARD MARINE had 5 years there got laid off at XMAS time told too come back after the 1st of the year. Dec. 15 the FEDEX lady was running thru town leaving letters for the OMC workers. Company filed for bankruptcy. NO severance pay NO vacation pay NO sick pay NO WARN ACT { plant closing } pay, NOTHING. Merry XMAS. I use too tell my father I wish I was 20 years old in the 50's instead of being born in the 50's. Then I Could of got 30 years in one job.

Other Comments:

As I sit back now and reflect on my experiences in life I am glad I followed my grandfather (WW1-France) and father (Korean War-Germany) and served my country. Even as a young boy I knew what they had done I would someday also do. And as every person who has served finds out you are sent where the military needs you and you do what the military needs you to do. It surely is not like the movies make it look like in Hollywood. As you grow older and have any health issues ( 2 stays in the UW hospital and 1 stay in a nursing home ) you have a lot of time to reflect on your younger days and appreciate the memories of our service days. The first enlisted marine I met ,my recruiter SGT/SSGT Dan Smith is STILL my best friend and we talk almost daily. MSGT Smith is in AZ and I'm in WI but we still keep in touch. Just shows what SEMPER FI is really about.

Reflections on Cpl Green's US Marine Corps Service

 Reflections On My Service

TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, WHAT INFLUENCED HIS/HER DECISION TO JOIN THE MARINE CORPS?
SGT/SSGT Danny Trent Smith the recruiter in Beloit in 1975. I had a package already set up with the Army, everything I wanted. E3 out of boot, MP for a MOS, but my father would not sign, told me to wait until I was 18. Wrecked my Dad's car when he was in the hospital, he asked " What do I have to do to make you behave?" I stated sign me in the service. My father stated bring me the paperwork. Federal holiday the next day NO ARMY NO NAVY but guess who was on duty, the MARINES and in uniform not like today's recruiter's in SWEATS. WHAT RANK ARE THEY????? Guess what the marine said, NO E3, Army ROTC not Marine ROTC, NO MP have to be 19 in the corps. What did I do? I enlisted for 3 years. Still consider MSGT Smith the best of friends.
TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH HE/SHE TOOK IN HIS/HER MILITARY SERVICE. WHERE DID THEY GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE THEY ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS HIS/HER REASON FOR LEAVING?
All told I served 2 tours in the Corps, a 3 and a 4 year hitch. Placed on the permanent disability retired list in 1983. Just another CHAPTER 61 RETIREE. Most Marines don't even know about us.
IF HE/SHE PARTICIPATED IN ANY MILITARY OPERATIONS, INCLUDING COMBAT, HUMANITARIAN AND PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS, TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DESCRIBE THOSE YOU FEEL WERE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT TO HIM/HER AND, IF LIFE-CHANGING, IN WHAT WAY.
No combat operations, but did do a WESTPAC and 2 FLY-AWAYS with The Walking Dead and 2 field operations with 2nd Med Bn and 2nd Landing Support Bn 2nd FSSG.
OF ALL THEIR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY HE/SHE HAD FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS THEIR LEAST FAVORITE?
FONDEST has to be 1st Bn 9th Marines 3rd MARDIV 1976-1977. Being forward deployed and to serve in an infantry unit and see the REAL CORPS.

LEAST FAVORITE was 29 Palms Ca. 1976 joined the Corps too see the world and get sent to the Mojave desert.
FROM THEIR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY PERSONAL MEMORIES, YOU MAY BE AWARE OF, WHICH IMPACTED HIM/HER THE MOST.
Finishing 2nd in my formal NCO leadership class at Camp Johnson, NC. The SGT that finished 1st only beat me by less than 1%. If I would only have studied the night before the final exam instead of going to the NCO club with my classmates.
WHAT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS DO YOU BELIEVE HE/SHE WAS MOST PROUD OF FROM HIS/HER MILITARY SERVICE?
For finishing 2nd in that NCO Leadership class the Marine Corps Association presented me with a Certificate of Achievement.
OF ALL THE MEDALS, AWARDS, FORMAL PRESENTATIONS AND QUALIFICATION BADGES HE/SHE RECEIVED, WHICH WERE THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO HIM/HER AND WHY?
Marine Rifle Expert Medal. EVERY MARINE IS A BASIC RIFLEMAN.
IF KNOWN, PLEASE LIST ANY INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM HIS/HER TIME IN THE MILITARY WHO STOOD OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON THEM AND WHY?
SGT/SSGT Smith D.T. the first enlisted marine I met. Taught me Marines take care of their own. Major / Col. R.D. Camp Jr. & 1stLt / General James N. Mattis who ran the RS in Milwaukee Wisc. in Feb. 1975. LtCol / Col. H.R. Curd PISC 1975 2 Silver Stars in 20 days in RVN. SSgt / MSgt John Hare Recon RVN My landlord at CLNC for 2 years. LtCol / Col. F.P. Eller Jr. Silver Star RVN. SSgt / Warrant Officer Clancy Baker original member of 1st Bn 9th Marines The Walking Dead. SgtMaj Matt Hardiman SgtMaj George Earele. Major General Mulqueen Major General Habel. This is just a few of the fine enlisted and officers that I had the HONOR of serving with. They always carried themselves as true professionals and in my eyes GREAT MARINES. In no means did I mean to leave out anyone. Just the years have taken a toll on the memory. I can honestly state since retirement I have met MANY phonies and blowhards that can't seem to stop STEALING THE VALOR from REAL MARINE WARRIORS. It has been my experience that the more they brag the less I believe their story. Not one of the above listed Marines ever spoke about their experiences unless pressured to answer questions, and never bragged. The STOLEN VALOR issue with the veteran community is a TERRIBLE disgrace to the REAL VETERANS that rate HONOR. Semper Fi and THANK-YOU for showing this young Marine what honor really means.
ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY PARTICULAR INCIDENT FROM HIS/HER SERVICE, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FUNNY AT THE TIME, BUT STILL MADE THEM LAUGH LATER ON?
Took me over 5 years to get my GCM. Would stand inspections with my hash mark and no GCM and Officers would state I was out of uniform.
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, WHAT PROFESSION(S) DID HE/SHE FOLLOW AFTER DISCHARGE?
Closed up 3 companies in my hometown Freeman Shoe, Universal Foods and Outboard Marine. I am now Retired.
IF KNOWN, WHAT MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS WAS HE OR SHE A MEMBER OF, IF ANY? ARE YOU AWARE OF ANY SPECIFIC BENEFITS THEY DERIVED FROM THEIR MEMBERSHIPS?
I belong to 17 veterans groups. Hard to be active in all but I believe in keeping my membership current. I am currently the Finance Officer for my American Legion Post.
IF HE/SHE SURVIVED MILITARY SERVICE, IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU BELIEVE HIS/HER SERVING IN THE MILITARY INFLUENCED THE WAY THEY APPROACHED THEIR PERSONAL LIFE, FAMILY LIFE AND CAREER?
Without serving in the Corps I would never have met my wife in the Philippines. We've been together over 38 years now. I guess the words SEMPER FI. Be always faithful in what you do and believe in'
IF THEY WERE HERE TODAY, WHAT ADVICE DO YOU THINK HE OR SHE WOULD GIVE TO THOSE WHO FOLLOWED IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS AND RECENTLY ENTERED MILITARY SERVICE?
Always try to do your best.
HOW EFFECTIVE HAS TOGETHERWESERVED.COM BEEN IN HELPING YOU RECORD YOUR REMEMBERED PERSONS MILITARY SERVICE? DO YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL COMMENTS OR SUGGESTIONS YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE?
Just nice to be around others who have done the same as you.
