Reflections on MSgt Roberts's
US Marine Corps Service
PLEASE DESCRIBE WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO JOIN THE MARINE CORPS.
My senior year in high school a friend talked me into joining vice going to college. He got sick, and I went by myself.
WHETHER YOU WERE IN THE SERVICE FOR SEVERAL YEARS OR AS A CAREER, PLEASE DESCRIBE THE DIRECTION OR PATH YOU TOOK. WHERE DID YOU GO TO BOOT CAMP AND WHAT UNITS, BASES, SHIPS OR SQUADRONS WERE YOU ASSIGNED TO? WHAT WAS YOUR REASON FOR LEAVING?
As a logistician I was interested in not just management, but leadership. I strived to get as much diversity as a could in order to learn more about the Corps and how leadership works. I chose to stay enlisted, because a Staff NCO my influence could be much more broad.
OF ALL YOUR DUTY STATIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, WHICH ONE DO YOU HAVE FONDEST MEMORIES OF AND WHY? WHICH WAS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
My time as a Drill instructor was my favorite. Although it was often like ground-hog day. The memories serving with fellow Hats who strove for perfection too was unlike anywhere else in the Corps.
My least favorite was serving as the 2nd FSSG in Camp Lejeune during the 90s.
FROM YOUR ENTIRE MILITARY SERVICE, DESCRIBE ANY MEMORIES YOU STILL REFLECT BACK ON TO THIS DAY.
My time training and learning as a Martial Arts Instructor Trainer.
WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) FROM YOUR TIME IN THE MILITARY STAND OUT AS HAVING THE MOST POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND WHY?
Select Leaders stood out to me. Not all but some made time lasting positive influence on me. Some were Marines and some were Navy. It was those few who truly believed in what they did, and the value in those who worked with them. Those select Leaders showed me how to lead.
WHAT PROFESSION DID YOU FOLLOW AFTER YOUR MILITARY SERVICE AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY SERVING, WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALTY?
I'm currently serving as an 0491.
BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE MARINE CORPS?
All things have good and bad, no matter where you go. Strive to focus on the good and create opportunities for yourself and for those around you. Your attitude, dedication, and perseverance is what will create the opportunities you want. Nothing is given, everything is earned.
