Volunteer with the National Park Service at the Marine Corps War Memorial for the past 13 years and also volunteer at Henderson Hall, HQMC as the Retired Affairs Officer for the past 9 years. Proud to be a MUSTANG of Marines and a Life member of TWS An Irish Blessing; May you be in Heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead!!! The recruits listed below are Fallen Marines that I put through PI when I was an SDI and they were the 20 Marines that were KIA in Vietnam that I know personally. God Bless them all and their families. Also listed there are other recruits that I had the pleasure of knowing when I was a SDI while at PI that were not KIA in Vietnam. Marines one and all. When I was commissioned a 2ndLt at the 1st Engineer Bn in Nov 68 I assummed a title that was unknown to me at that time and it stayed with me as long as I was a butter bar. I became the SSJO or SMALL SHITTY JOBS OFFICER which included doing every thing that no other officer wanted to do in the Bn or Battery I was assigned to. They were indeed the worst you could imagine and the most time consuming things I ever dealt with.
Other Comments:
My wife, Anne and my sister-in-law Susan each had a brick installed for me at the DI Memorial in Parris Island. My children Cheryl, Kevin and Tim laid a brick for me at the USMC Museum as a Christmas present in 2007. Two of my former recruits, Sgt Ray Edwards and MGySgt Simon from Plt 3086 and I had bricks laid at the DI Memorial for SSgt Driver one of our JDI's from the Platoon and nine of the recruits from Platoon 3086 that were KIA in Vietnam. We want to thank the DI Association for the exception to the rule in allowing us to lay the bricks in their honor at the Memorial. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BROWN NOSE AND A SHITHEAD IS DEPTH PERCEPTION. TACT: THE ABILITY TO TELL A PERSON TO GO TO HELL AND MAKE THEM FEEL HAPPY TO BE ON THEIR WAY. I met Larry in Aug of 66 along with my brother. What have we done? We grew up in a pretty strict household, Dad was 10 years Army. Dad wanted us to serve our Country for at least 4 years so that is what we enlisted for. After meeting Larry and his band of thugs, I thought I'd never make it.
There were 2 times that I had difficulty in Boot Camp, and Larry ( S/Sgt Ward) took the time to instruct me on how to shoot properly and the other was during Drown Proofing. At the Range, he got next to me while we were at the 500 yard line and explained to me how to get my sight alignment correct in a fatherly manner. I didn't expect that and I was able to hit the Bull's Eye for the first time.
During Drown Proofing, I couldn't float. He pulled me out of the pool and asked me what my major problem was. I told him "Sir, the Private can't float" He said in his Drill Instructor voice, that there were only 3 things we couldn't do, Slam a revolving door, Strike a match on a wet bar of soap, and Put used toothpaste back into a used toothpaste tube. Anything thing else we can do. Once he completed our little talk, he returned me to the pool only as a Senior Drill Instructor could..... I FLOATED and passed the Drown Proofing. When ever I have trouble or doubt in my life, those words echo in my head.
We recently met again at Quantico along with a few other Recruits from his past Platoons and we not only call Larry our SDI and friend, but sincerely call him "Dad" for teaching us to take care of ourselves where ever we may be.
