Other Memories Dad tried to get into the USMC at 16yrs of age but was caught with his altered ID and rejected as under age. So in July 1944 at 16 yrs of age dad joined the Merchant Marines.
Dad served aboard several vessels on both foreign and coastwise voyages during this Merchant Marine service including S.S.Hadnot (Tanker), S.S.William Windom (Liberty Ship), and S.S.Tampico (T2 Tanker).
At 17 yrs of age dad finally convinced his parents to sign the parental consent form for him to enlist in the Marine Corps which they did on 20 Jul 1945.
Dad enlisted into the USMC (Reserve) and began active service on 11 August 1945.
He was assigned to the 6th Recruit Battalion at Parris Island, SC which he joined on 13 Aug 1945.
On 6 Nov 1945 he graduated boot camp and was transferred to MB U.S. Naval Supply Depot, Bayonne, NJ.
On 2 Feb 1946 he was transferred to 2nd Bn, 1st Special Marine Brigade, MB Quantico, VA.
On 19 March 1946 he was discharged at the "Convience of the Government" (C of G) and was immediately reenlisted as a "Regular" for a period of 3 years with immediate transfer to Hq. Sq., USMCAS, Cherry Pt. NC.
