Other Memories My Drill Sergeant, one time put one of our tougher men in charge of the platoon for drilling. I smarted off to this fellow and told him that I thought he should be easier on us and, if he didn't, I would be on his back. I did not think anymore about my remarks to this man until that evening after supper when the main Drill Sergeant called me and this man up to his tent. He was dangling some boxing gloves to each of us and said since I had made the remarks, that we should have a little match and get it out of our system. Those gloves were so thin, not having any padding, but I was 6'-3" tall, weighing 150 lbs. and said to myself that I wouldn't have any trouble with beating this fellow, who was 140 lbs. and 5'-11" tall. I grew up that night. This guy beat the tar out of me. I found out later that he was Golden Gloves boxing champion in New Mexico the previous year. So I learned it would be best to keep my mouth shut. He and I later became friends and I thank him for helping me to become a better man.
