Silver Star

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Gunnery Sergeant John Mark Avery (MCSN: 1518220), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company B, 1st Amphibian Tractor Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 25 October 1968, Gunnery Sergeant Avery was aboard the lead vehicle in a column of amphibian tractors transporting an infantry unit when the Marines came under a heavy volume of fire from a large hostile force. Unhesitatingly exposing himself to the intense fire, Gunnery Sergeant Avery immediately manned a machine gun and commenced delivering suppressive fire upon the enemy emplacements. Ignoring the hostile rounds impacting near him, he maneuvered his vehicle to the flank of the enemy's position and continued to deliver a heavy volume of fire which forced the hostile soldiers to flee in panic and confusion. Later that day, his amphibian tractor detonated an enemy explosive device and burst into flames, seriously wounding Gunnery Sergeant Avery. Disregarding his painful injuries, he directed his men in establishing a defensive perimeter to provide security for the remaining vehicles and supervised them in assisting a Marine that was trapped inside the burning amphibian tractor. Steadfastly remaining alert, he continued his determined efforts until he was medically evacuated. His timely aid and heroic actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty, Gunnery Sergeant Avery upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
