Last Known Activity PFC McKinney was on a squad-size patrol near Cay Sung (1), 6 K from the Tuy Loan Bridge when it was ambushed on three sides by an unknown number of NVA. By the time the Sparrow Hawk reaction force scrambled to assist, 4 survivors had made it back to the CP, all of them WIA. The other eight were all KIA. (LCpl Othel Thomas later died of his wounds).PFC James Popp's heroism broke the ambush and allowed the three to survive. He was awarded the Navy Cross Posthumously and it is included in his profile.

US Marine Private First Class Jerry Layne McKinney was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps, PFC McKinney served our country until April 8th, 1967 in Quang Nam, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that Jerry died from artillery fire. His body was recovered. Jerry was born on February 9th, 1947 in Leaksville, North Carolina. PFC Mc Kinney is on panel 17E, line 126 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.
Morehead High School Friend 1966: Jerry, I have visited you at the Wall and I will continue to do so. Remember when we were in drafting class together and how much fun we had playing practical jokes on the instructor. Remember working at the A&P Supermarket to have spending money in our small town. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Harry T McKinney, 215 Oakwood Drive, Leaksville, NC.
He served with Foxtrot Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd MAF.
He was awarded The Combat Action Ribbon(CAR), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
