Semper Fi, Gunny!
I was a PFC in the same unit as Gunnery Sergeant Russ. We were in Mortar Battery, 3rd Bn, 12th Marines when he was KIA in May of 1966. He was leading a patrol to recover one of our mortars that had fallen out of a helicopter sling. The patrol was ambushed and GySgt Russ died facing the enemy.
