Description Some 14 NATO countries will participate in 'Exercise Dynamic Mix 2000,' the biggest NATO exercise in 2000, which is to be hosted by Italy, Greece and Turkey. The exercise, to be commanded by NATO Commander in Chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe Adm. J. Ellis, would exercise forces from 14 countries in order to ensure that units in southern Europe understand each other better and to broaden their capabilities. The exercise is to be hosted by Italy, Greece and Turkey and will take place between May 20 and June 10.
Each country will host separate phases of the exercise: Kyparissia, Greece, will see the air exercise; Sardinia, Italy, will host the amphibious assault phase and Corlu-Kirklareli, Turkey, will hold another amphibious exercise and joint training. The air exercise will take place in international airspace whereas the land exercise will take place in Thessalonica, Greece, the birthplace of Ataturk.
Turkey's force composition in the various phases will be as follows: Humanitarian exercise in Italy -- one infantry battalion Response Cell (HQ); the land exercise in Turkey will see a brigade HQ, a battalion HQ and a battalion of infantry take part. The amphibious phase will see 150 Turkish soldiers and the landing ship TCG Sarucabey take part. Turkey will contribute two frigates, two attack boats and two submarines to the naval exercise. Some 12 F-16 fighters from Turkey will be based at the Neo Ankhialos air base in Greece and 42 F-16s and F-4s together with three KC-135 tanker aircraft based in Turkey will participate. This is the first time in 28 years that Turkish aircraft have gone to Greece for a NATO exercise.
