Mr. C. H. (Mike) Lewis Jr., 85, of Hillsboro died Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at his residence. He was born October 28, 1921, in Shelbyville, Tennessee, son of the late Claude H. Sr. and Laviria Yancey Lewis. His father was a Baptist minister, and his mother was a schoolteacher. He was attending Middle Tennessee State Teachers College when the attack on Pearl Harbor ccurred. Major Lewis started his military career in naval flight training and was eventually assigned to the Marine Air Group. The next 21 years are history--flying corsairs, B-24 bombers and helicopters from the Pacific in World War II, to Korea, and finally Vietnam before retirement in 1963. He then went on to receive a Master's degree from Texas A & M at Kingsville and spent an additional 20 years teaching, ending his career as dean of the Marine Military Academy in Harleeh.
Upon his second retirement, he and his wife moved to the Hill Country, where he was a substitute teacher, member of a volunteer fire department and deacon at Rio Frio Baptist Church of Leakey. A member of First Baptist Church of Hillsboro, he was past master of San Benito Masonic Lodge #1064 and charter member of Al Amin Temple of the Shriners of Corpus Christi. He was also a member of National Sojourners, MMOA Foreign Wars, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marine Corp League and Phi Delta Kappa. He had 50 years of service with Masons and Scottish Rite in Texas and Florida. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Sylvia; and one daughter, Nancy Lewis Yudesis. Survivors include: two daughters, Ivel Sylvia Moore and Melissa Lewis Young and husband, David, all of Hillsboro; two sisters, Jayne Lewis Bernard of Memphis, Tennessee and Barbara Westlake of Pegram, Tennessee; son-in-law, Ben Yudesis of San Benito; seven grandchildren, Leigh Wilson and husband, Shaun, of Lafayette, Lou-isiana, Chris Moore and wife, Becky, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mike Moore and wife, Savanah, and Jim Moore and wife, Lisa, all of Oklahoma, Michele Tigelaar and husband, Brian, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Deborah Lozano of Hillsboro and Larry Phillips and wife, Irene, of Mission; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
