Description USAFE supported Air Mobility Command (AMC) and US Marines evacuating 148 Americans and 82 others from Rwanda after fierce fighting broke out between Hutus and Tutsis. The last of 230 civilians, including 142 U.S. citizens, fleeing ethnic bloodshed in bordering Rwanda, were evacuated to safety through the central African nation of Burundi by a contingency force of U.S. Marines April 12. The evacuation was an "extraordinary" event, according to American Ambassador to Rwanda David Rawson.
