While two antitank battalions were projected in the 1943 Fleet Marine Force Plan, only the 2nd Battalion was organized, on 1 Sep 1942 at MCB, San Diego, California. It was initially assigned to the 1st Marine Amphibious Corps (IMAC) and served in New Zealand and Noumea, New Caledonia, where it was deactivated on 17 Dec 1943. It had a headquarters and service battery and three (3) antitank batteries, each with eight (8) halftrack mounted 75mm AT guns, four (4) truck mounted 37mm AT guns, and five M3A1 scout cars. It's assets were absorbed into the 2nd Marine Division's 2nd Special Weapons Battalion and the three (3) regimental weapons companies.
