Memories For This Unit
Best Friends Glad to be a plank owner for HML-167. I was the first Maintenance Officer. We had the highest Operational Readiness in the 1st MAW. I had a great team supporting me under tough circumstances. I was later out-ranked by another senior maintenance officer who reported for duty. I became Assistant Maintenance Officer. That's when I knew the USMC was not a career for me.Why would someone replace what we had going?
Best Moment Having the best operational readiness in the entire 1st MAW for several months
Worst Moment I was Captain. Having a Major relieve me as Maintenance Officer when we were on top. I know, the billet was a Major's billet, but we were the first squadron formed in a combat environment and were leading the entire 1st MAW. I was flying maintenance test flights almost until dark, but I never saw than happen again.
Other Memories Pulling a USMC recon team out of a situation when they were being over run. We put in lots of recon teams that sometimes got into some real shit. One night after Medevac duty, we were diverted to assist this team that was in trouble. Just me in a UH 1E and a H-34. We got them out, over-boosted the H-34 and the pilot ( Buzz Knight) earned his Silver Star in spades. Awesome!
