Last Known Activity:

Darwin Hemenway of Farmer, Ohio entered the Marine Corps on March 4, 1943. He was one of five sons of the Hemenway family to serve in the military during World War II. Darwin was reported missing in action during the invasion of the Marshall Islands and is presumed dead. In honor of the sacrifice made by Darwin and his family the Herman Hesselschwardt Detachment, #758, Defiance, Ohio, Department of Ohio Marine Corps League established the Darwin Hemenway Memorial scholarship fund in his name in 1993.

PFC Darwin E HEMENWAY was crewman of an amphibian tractor of Company A, 11th Amphibian Tractor Battalion that hit a coral reef during the landing on Ennuebing (Jacob) Island and was lost at sea on January 31, 1944. Lost along with him were the other crewman, PFC Ralph A CARBERRY, Pvt Abdow ABRAHAM and four (4) Marines of Battery G, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines, 4th Marine Division.

Darwin's brother, PFC Arthur Hemenway, Company A, 393rd Infantry, 99th Division, U.S Army, was KIA 12/17/1944 in Belgium. He was shot/executed after his capture at the Battle of the Bulge.
