Mike and I grew up in Virden, Illinois as best friends. We joined the Marine Corps on the buddy plan and attended boot camp at MCRD San Deigo. Mike went to school in Pensacola after ITR for radio training. He was a tough Marine and always there for me. He is missed by many. Another chapter in the book old friend. Semper Fi! Sgt. Other Memories Camp Pendleton, California July 13- Marine Private John J. Langheim, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Langheim of 110 N. Henderson and Private First Class John M. Johnson, son of Mrs. Betty Braden of 508 E. Holden, all of Virden has completed individual combat training here. The four-week course included over 200 hours of instruction under simulated combat conditions, covering squad tactics guerilla warfare, day and night combat patrolling and the use of infantry weapons. Their next stop is four weeks of basic specialist training in their occupational field. Marines to be assigned to infantry units will be taught infantry sub-specialties, such as the machine gun, grenade launcher, rifle, or mortar. Marines to be assigned to highly technical specialties will be sent to military technical schools for their specialist training. Leathernecks bound for the Pacific will receive more training when they report to Staging Battalion, at Camp Pendleton, Calif. This training will emphasize jungle warfare, patrolling, and civic action based on experience gained in Vietnam.
