Colonel P. C. DeLong was one of the few Marine Corps pilots who claimed the distinction of being a Double Ace.
His son was also a Marine Corps Officer and retired as a LtGen. He is also a skilled combat pilot.

Also known as the "Checkerboards", the squadron is based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 31 (MAG-31) and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (2nd MAW). The Radio Callsign is "Check."
