Enjoying life, as we travel, be it on a cruise, flight, or a car trip. So much to see, and so little time remaining. Every day is a gift to be thankful for. Still, much more to see and do, as we continue the march.

Enjoying my full retirement from the USMC,(20 yrs),and the Department of Agriculture(22yrs) as a Federal Meat & Poultry Inspector. I conducted anti, and post mortem inspections on all red meat species, that are sold in commerce. I have also been tasked with inspecting equine(horses) for export to France. Inspected poultry, and red meat in slaughter plants, and processing plants, from Maine to Virginia. Worked with Veterinarians on pathology dispositions of all species of red meat, and poultry. Conducted Pre-operational, and operational inspections of facilities, and plant personnel. Had to ensure product ingredient formulations were being adhered to. Restaurants, and supermarkets were not under our control. Only Federally regulated establishments were inspected, by the field Inspectors. We were considered the "Police Force", for the meat, and poultry industry. Consumer protection was our ultimate responsibility, and goal.

Best Moment This was a six month deployment to the Med. We spent Christmas,1964 in Rota Spain, and had ports of call, various ports in Italy,France, and Greece. Highlight was our visit to Rome, audience with Pope Paul, then on to Paris for five days. This Med cruise was one of the best periods of my USMC career.
Worst Moment A 3rd Class Navy Baker, and I made a large run of fresh bread dough one night while we were at sea. We assembled all the necessary ingredients, and mixed the dough. Then we waited for the dough to rise. It never happened. We had this very large mixture of bread dough, but it wouldn't rise. We back checked our procedure, and discovered Charley, the Navy baker had put in a pound of salt, as did I. A pound of salt to much. Killed the yeast. We had to wait until the early hours of the morning, then we carried the useless dough topside, and dumped it over the side before anyone could see what we were doing. That dough hit the water, and sounded like a "man overboard". We made another run of dough that worked. Sure was glad to get through that night without getting put on report for a careless mistake.
Other Memories My Buddy Sgt. Ron Brown, and I volunteered for MP duty for five days in Paris France. We made all the tours during the day, had our meals and hotel accomodations furnished us, commensurate with our duties. One evening we were directed to go to a section of Paris, made famous during the post second world war era, called "Pigalle" Ladies of the night were lined up on both sides of the street, waiting for "customers". When they saw us, they started, screaming "Jondame", "Jondame"(misspelled)and started running in all directions. They recognized us as the police, but we were only Military Police. Ron, and I were quite disappointed, that we didn't get to at least say "hello" to these pretty girls before they vanished into the night.
