Chain of Command Lt Col Sarles served as Commanding Officer of Marine Bomber Squadron VMB 611 from November 16, 1943 until his death on May 30, 1945.
Under Lt Col Sarles' Command, VMB 611 served in:
Cherry Point, NC - Nov 43/Dec 43 - MAG 61, 3rd MAW;
Parris Island, SC - Jan 44/Aug 44 - MAG 61, 3rd MAW;
MCAD, Miramar, San Diego, CA - Aug 44/Sep 44 - Marine Fleet Air, West Coast - (Deployed to South Pacific in two stages; San Diego and Port Hueneme, CA);
Emirau, St Matthias Group - Nov 44/Mar 45 - MAG 61, 1st MAW - (Solomon Islands Operations);
VMB 611 continued operations at Zamboanga through the end of the war, in addition to post-war operations of providing navigational flights/escort for Marine fighter aircraft to China.
VMB 611 departed Zamboanga for the last time in early November 1945 to return to the States. Upon arrivial at Pearl Harbor, all their PBJs were seized and dumped into the Pacific Ocean.
VMB 611 was decommissioned at Cherry Point, NC on November 30, 1945.
