Dad enlisted in the USNR as a Sea2c, on June 23, 1942 at St Louis, Missouri. His designation was later changed to Aviation Cadet.

As an Aviation Cadet, he attended Naval Aviation Pre-Flight School from September 3, 1942 to November 25, 1942 at Iowa City, Iowa.

As an AvCad, he attended Naval Aviation Primary Flight Training from December 3, 1942 to March 2, 1943 at NAS, Lambert Field, St Louis, Missouri.

As an AvCad, he attended Naval Aviation Advanced Flight Training from March 4, 1943 to June 18, 1943 at Naval Air Training Center, Corpus Christi, Texas.

On June 19, 1943, Dad accepted commission as Second Lieutenant in the USMCR.

On June 24, 1943, Dad was assigned to Marine Barracks, NAS, Jacksonville, Florida, for Temporary Aviation Duty under instruction in Air Operational Training Command.

On August 26, 1943, Dad was detached to MAG 61, 3rd MAW, Cherry Point, North Carolina. On August 28, 1943, he married my Mother in St Louis, Missouri. (On August 28, 1944, his only son, David, was born in Decatur, Illinois.)

On September 13, 1943, he joined MAG 61 at Cherry Point, NC.
