Memories For This Unit

Chain of Command
Lt Col George A Sarles, Commanding Officer of VMB 611.

Other Memories
In late March 1945, VMB 611 joined MAG 32, MAGSZAM, at Moret Field, Zamboanga, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. VMB 611 would be the only Marine Bomber Squadron to operate and support Army ground troops in the Philippines during the war.

Dad's next 19 missions, including his last, were conducted as part of the Philippine Islands Campaign and were concentrated on the island of Mindanao.

On the fateful day of 30 May 1945, VMB 611 saw their greatest one-day loss of the war. Lt Col Sarles and three of his crew members were KIA. My Dad and his crew became MIA. Twelve of VMB 611's fellow Marines were gone.
