Arriving by train about 10 PM en-route to Parris Island ... this is where it all started in '55' ... DI's in Modified Dress Blues met the train and ???? ... The next morning, breakfast was served at a small lunch counter across the street. After chow, my very first job in the Corps was to clean and polish the railroad tracks with my tooth-brush ... me and about 50 future Marines had them shining like new (even with DI's screaming into our ears)... The DI's were yelling: "you clean and polish the tracks until the bus comes for your sorry asses --- if the bus doesn't come, you had better be in Miami tomorrow at the end of the line." Eventually we boarded the bus to transport us about 8 miles to PI and the famous 'receiving' building ... and a most memorable, fulfilling and rewarding career followed.
Note: I later met and served with the Senior DI from Yemassee that day, SSGT Lacy Thompson ... he was an excellent Marine ...
