This is the Boot Camp "Battle Portrait", taken with a camo-covered steel pot, to give to the folks back home, showing them the hard-assed Marine I was expected to become.
The utilities are dark green in the picture because they were still almost brand new.
My mother kept this particular photo in her prayer book for all the years since I gave it to her. She let me borrow the snapshot to scan, then return it. (She is now in her mid-80s.)
