Col Bray was awarded the British Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry on Tarawa.
Since the Gilbert Islands were British possessions prior to WWII, the UK awarded several medals to Marines and Navy Corpsmen for their bravery during the battle to take the colony back from the Japanese.
