I highly suspect that this aircraft was piloted by a Ltjg Terry Rieder. He was hit by antiaircraft ground fire, probably 37MM or 57MM and received extensive battle damage. An intermittent blossom of flame would shoot from Terry's right wing root whenever he let the right wing down and fuel would flow from the undamaged left wing fuel tank into the smoldering fire burning in the right wing. Terry survived the landing at NKP. This incident occurred only a couple of days before the USS Bon Homme Richard was to leave Yankee Station at the end of our 1968 deployment. Our Skipper and X.O. were trying to find out when LTjg Rieder was to return to the ship when one of the "Jolly Greens" delivered Terry to the ship, clad in one of their no-see-me suits, wearing one of their trademark Aussie turned up at the brim hats, and drunk as a lord. Terry was awarded a DFC for that mission.
Respectfully, Steve Gray, VA-212 Jan.1967-October-1968?
I was able to confirm that this would have been in September 1968
