The 5th Marine REGIMENT did three force marches with combat loads (FYI combat load was T/O weapon, equipment, 3 meals (C's), clothing & equipment for 2 days) . The ONLY weapons not carried were the 4-duce mortars. Yes, 3.5's, flames and 81's were humped. Sleeping bags were trucked to end of days march. Cooks, messmen, sick lame & lazy were forward and rear party . . . always had field mess set up for evening meal. Breakfast and lunch were c's on the march.
1958 - 87 miles in 5 days - Camp Margarita, Camp Pendleton to Camp Matthews (north end is now MCAS Miramar), CA and return (2 days down, 2 back - day 3 was a regimental beerbust and field meet).
1959 - 101 miles in 4 days - Camp Margarita around the fence line and shore line of MCB Camp Pendleton.
1960 - 174 miles in 6 days - Dead Mans Lake (dry), 29 Palms to Camp Margarita, Camp Pendleton.
Boondocker = make one
Boondocker Supreme = make two or all three.
