While seving as Commanding Officer of A, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion 3rd Marine Division in action against hostile Viet Cong forces near Da Nang, Vietnam on 12 July 1965. The reconnaissance patrol led by First Lieutenant Reasoner had deeply penetrated heavily controlled enemy territory when it came under extremely heavy fire from an estimated 50 to 100 Viet Cong insurgents. Acconpanying the advance party and the point that consisted of five men ,he immediaely deployed his men for an assult after the Viet Cong had opened fire from numerous conceled positions. Boldy shouting encouragements and virtually isolated from the main body, he organized a base of fire for an assult on the enemy positions. The slashing fury of the Viet cong machine gun and automatic weapons fire made it impossable for the main body to move forward. Repeatedly exposing himself to devasting attack he skifully provided covering fire, killing at least two viet Cong and effectively silencing an automatic weapons positon in a vsliant attemt to effect evacuation of a wounded man. As casualties began to mount his radio operator was wounded and First Lteutenant Reasoner immediately moved to his side and tended his wounds. When the radio operator was hit for the second time while attempting to reach coverd position, First Lieutenant Reasoner courageously running to his aid through grazing maching gun fire fell mortally wounded. The U.S. also attempted to consolidate its ground operations more efficiently. For this purpose, it organized the U.S. Army Vietnam (USARV). U.S. support in the I Corps tactical zone, composed of five northernmost provinces, was to be primarily a Marine Corps responsibility; the U.S. Army was to operate mainly in the II and III Corps tactical zones which comprised the Central highlands, adjacent coastal regions, and the area around Saigon; and ARVN troops were to retain primary responsibility for the Delta region of the IV Corps.
On 19 October 1965. three VC regiments totaling 6,000 men attacked a Civil Irregular Defense Group (CIDG) - U.S. Special Forces at Plei Me, near the entrance to the Ia Drang Valley, in what purported to be the start of a thrust to cut the country in half.
With the assistance of massive air strikes, elements of the newly arrived 1st Cavalry Division thwarted the enemy in a battle that lasted nearly a month and included several engagements. The Ia Drang Valley action was the costliest in terms of casualties to date.
