For extraordinary heroism while serving as a Team Chief
with Special Operations Task Force West, Combined Joint Special
Operations Task Force Afghanistan, U.S. Marine Corps Forces,
Special Operations Command, in support of Operation ENDURING
FREEDOM. On 29 July 2012, while advising Afghan commandos
conducting an operation into an insurgent stronghold village,
Gunnery Sergeant Gifford observed three commandos become
casualties when the force received small arms fire shortly after
insertion. Without hesitation he mounted an All Terrain Vehicle
and crossed 800 meters of exposed ground, performed first aid,
and, with the help of another Marine, moved the casualties
several hundred meters to a protected landing zone for medical
evacuation. The other commandos were pinned down under heavy
enemy fire, and sustained more casualties. Realizing the Afghan
force was in jeopardy, Gunnery Sergeant Gifford gathered extra
ammunition and, accompanied by a fellow Marine, crossed the same
open terrain under fire to reinforce the beleaguered Afghans. He
rallied the commandos and led an assault on the enemy. After
eliminating an insurgent firing from a window, he climbed atop
the building from which insurgents were engaging the commandos,
and dropped a grenade down the chimney. He continued to attack
until he fell mortally wounded, but his actions proved decisive
in breaking the insurgent defense and allowing the commandos to
secure the village. By his decisive actions, bold initiative, and
complete dedication to duty, Gunnery Sergeant Gifford reflected
great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of

Gunnery Sergeant Gifford�??s personal leadership from the front and tireless dedication to the mission, his men, and his partner force throughout sustained combat operations while mentoring the 9th Special Operations Kandak, directly led to the success of his Marine Special Operations Team during combat operations in Afghanistan. Calm and collected in the face of enemy fire, Gunnery Sergeant Gifford tenaciously pursued the enemy during the execution of over 40 helicopter-borne and ground assault combat operations into the insurgent-held areas of Farah, Herat, and Badghis provinces. While executing the mission in these dangerous areas, his relentlessly pursued the enemy, regularly placing himself at the point of friction in the face of insurgent forces and their fires, to lead his element to make in actions that broke the assault of the enemy. On 27 June, while conducting a foot mobile patrol in the village of Emerat, he noticed the signs of an impending attack and instructed his patrol to set up a hard point in a nearby building. As the insurgents assaulted his positions, Gunnery Sergeant Gifford exposed himself to fire to observe the enemy gun positions and direct the fires of his element, resulting in six enemy dead and eight enemy wounded-in-action. By his extraordinary guidance, zealous initiative, and total dedication to duty, Gunnery Sergeant Gifford reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

On 27 November 2010, during disruption operations in Badghis province the ground force came under accurate and suppressive enemy fire. Gunnery Sergeant Gifford boldly led a small element of five commandos and two U. S. Marines to close with the enemy. While detached from reinforcements and scaling a 2000 foot mountain, closing a distance of 800 meters, his element located the insurgents and engaged them with small arms in order to relieve enemy pressure on the main body. While continuing to maneuver he was able to lead his small element to overcome disadvantages in terrain and ultimately destroyed the insurgents and recovered equipment abandoned by the fleeing enemy. By his extraordinary leadership, disregard for his own safety, and total dedication to duty Gunnery Sergeant Gifford reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

For heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy as Team Leader, 1st Platoon, 2d Force Reconnaissance Company, Regimental Combat Team 2, 2d Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 04-06 from August 2005 to February 2006 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Sergeant Gifford participated in over 80 precision raids on high value individuals where he inflicted a lethal blow on 5 and was instrumental in the capture of over 60. On 15 October, near Jubbah, Sergeant Gifford's team discovered cached weapons and improvised explosive device materials in a cave. After establishing an ambush, three insurgents with AK-47s arrived and one noticed the observation post before all had entered the kill zone. Sergeant Gifford initiated the ambush neutralizing one insurgent and the other two fled. He directed a Marine to pursue one insurgent into the cave and he pursued the other. Without regard for his safety, he left his covered position and drew the insurgent's fire, allowing a team member to flank and neutralize the insurgent. Sergeant Gifford then moved inside the cave and determined the final insurgent had fled down a tunnel. He cleared the area, threw a grenade down the tunnel, and eliminated the last insurgent. By his zealous initiative, courageous actions and exceptional dedication to duty, Sergeant Gifford reflected great credit upon him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Thirty days continuous or accumulated service in direct support of NATO operations, on land, at sea or in the air spaces of the Former Yugoslavia, Albania, the Former Republic of Macedonia, and the Adriatic Sea (the theatre of operations) commencing 1 July 1992 and ending 31 December 2002; or Ninety days continuous or accumulated service commencing 1 July 1992 and ending 31 December 2002, in the territories of Italy, Greece, Hungary and Austria, in direct support of the NATO operations in the Former Yugoslavia (the adjacent area).
