One year and one day later (after being transfered to USMC Fleet Reserve),Iraqi invaded Kuwait and my Marines went without me.Having spent three (3)years with USCENTCOM and in and out of the A.O.R. I Volunteered for active duty & requested orders to be deployed.I received a nice letter vice orders. Brigades from the 7th Infantry Division (Light) and the 82d Airborne Division joined the 1st Marine Division and airborne companies from Great Britain and Egypt at the Marine Corps' Desert Training Center at 29 Palms, California. Supply operations constituted a major part of the training since any military contingency in the Middle East would depend heavily upon resupply support. Exercise Gallant Eagle in California,Exercise Shadow Hawk in Jordan,& Exercise Bright Star in Egypt.I was on the ground when The USS STARK GOT HIT.I wrote several Communications Call Out messages in order for all the Joint Forces to be on the same sheet of music and able to communicate. Exercises;Gallant Knight,Iron Cobra,Quick Force,Inferno Creek,Easy Wind,Accurate Test,Challenge Express,Neutral Ground,and Quick Force.Other dutied included: Communications Material and Systems (CMS) Custodian,(at the time)I was the 2nd Marine to ever run an Air Force CMS Accout. ''There's a live-fire exercise going on right now in Twentynine Palms, and with the end of that, the exercise will stand down,'' said Air Force Maj. John Meyer, spokesman for the joint-service command post at March Air Force Base.
Although it would take several days to analyze the performance of thousands of Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force units, ''everyone generally feels happy and satisfied,'' Meyer said.
An Ohio Army private was killed and several others were injured, including a Georgia soldier whose right hand was nearly severed, during the exercise, but the total number of injuries during the exercise had not been tallied, he said.
Three men were killed in a helicopter crash July 10 during pre-exercise preparations, Meyer said.
The exercise, centered at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center here, 130 miles east of Los Angeles, was to test military personnel in a desert environment should they be called to action in the Middle East.
It was also a test to find out whether the services can be coordinated in one effort, said Marine Col. Bill Wydo.
During the maneuvers across hundreds of miles of California wasteland, troops fired live ammunition, coped with searing desert heat and learned how to fight by day and night.
The Air Force flew hundreds of missions from bases nationwide, and the Navy used container ships similar to those used by the British during the Falkland Islands war to support the massive exercise.
One of the Gallant Eagle highlights was Friday's successful night airborne assault by 742 Army paratroopers.
Safety has been stressed since the 1982 Gallant Eagle maneuver, when six paratroopers were killed and 150 were injured during a tactical drop in high winds.

That I took into Korea with me...good thing I ended up on an unexpected extended stay.

Visiting the port of call Hong Kong while still under British control & prior it's return to the Chinese. Went straight to a McDonalds and ordered a Big Mac cost $8.00 (Hong Kong Dollars) = $1.00 US. Would have paid it either way. Rode the Ferry's over & back many times. Also visited Mt Victoria & went to the Observatory several times. I'll never forget the smells & taste of the food being cooked and serverd on the street by vendors.

The USS BLUE RIDGE was in the U.S. Naval Ship Yard Philadelphia,Pa. during 1972-1973 & my Navy Girl Friend along with another WAVE were the First Navy Enlisted Women to have served on board ship. They basicly had a work space on board while in dock. My Girl Friend quickly reminded me (during one of our re-unions)that she did go to sea for a short shake down cruise & that the Philadelphia Enquire was there upon return for the interview & picture that made the front page. It was fitting that The Blue Ridge was her first Ship & My Last Ship. I sent her a picture of me & The BLUE RIDGE in Hong Kong. Thanks to both for the memories.

We also lost a Lt in Cuba in a mine field accident. The unit spent part of a winter at Ft Pickett,near Blackstone,VA. Shortly after The Marine Barracks Bombing in Beruit, Major General Al GRAY had the entire Division on the parade field for inspection & review.President Ronald REAGAN came to the old 2d Division HQ bldg.#2 on a cold,gray rainy drizzel of a Carolina November afternoon and said "Where do we find such men?" Reagon also said,"Some people spend an entire life time...wondering if they have made a differance to this world...The MARINES,do Not have that problem." There will probably never be another Pappa Bear or Ronald REAGAN. One thing is certain our current(now former) President George W. When Dick and I were driving thru Joshua Tree Natl. Monument and we stoped to visit with some other Marines. Not only was one of them my distant cousin,His Grand Mother married a Pennington and My Grand Mother are Sisters Our Cousin is J.P. PENNINGTON of "The EXCILE's Band" Thier biggest hit was "I wanta Kiss you all over". Not Only that but his room mate,a Marine by the name of Robert (Robbie) NEEL and I had worked together and gone to high school in Richmond,Indiana. Robbie had been on the Temporary Medical Retired List for an injury received during a Military Jump and was being retrained. He had moved to Calif with his Mother & we had lost track of each other until that day.

When the orders and the unit diary got to be "fubar" and of course the pay turned out to be a total cluster. I was joined on the unit diary as Permanent Personel vice Student under Instruction. Also the apporation data was wrong. Therefore no BAS (ComRats),No BAQ (basic allowance for quarters),No FSA (family seperation allowance),& No TAD (tempary addition duty) Monies. All due to a certain admin clerk. My Family & I Suffered & Struggled like we did most of my Career.

When I was Commisioned as a Honorary KENTUCKY COLONEL and became a memember of the (A.L.E.) Accociation of Law Enforcement presented by The Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond,Ky. I worked with the local Marine Recruiters,setting up Static Displays & Equipment including weapons & vehicals at Masterson Station Park Fair Grounds.I enjoyed teaching new recruites (poolees) about small arms,safety,and letting them fam fire at the indoor range with both pistols & using 22 cal.adaptors for M-16's. with thier Recruiters as Saftey Coaches. I got to work with local law enforcement officers and other agencies, to include ATF along with community leaders, public officials and social & historical groups. I taught classes on The Flag to The Boy Scouts. I atteneded Eastern Ky University's Law Enforcement Career Day & explained Marine Corps Opportunities both in Reserve & Regular,Enlisted & Commissioned Officer Programs. I set up tactical and garrison equipment and weapons displays in the Fayette Mall with the Lexington Metro Police Dept for Law Enforcement Month every May. I worked with the US ARMY RESERVE,US NAVAL RESERVE & KENTUCKY NATIONAL GUARD especially THE KY AIR NATL GUARD during our Helo Ops/lifts and training at Ft Knox.Most of the pilots were Marine Vietnam Vets and flew out of Frankfort,Ky.I enlisted Kieth SPURLOCK while he was attending UK during his time as USMCR he made Sgt and upon graduation was Commisioned as a Marine 2nd Lt. He later moved to CA.and was on the Sheriff's Dept before going on active duty. After I retired I got a letter from Captain SPURLOCK while he was deployed during to the First Iraqi Gulf War,with words to the effect,"Top,where the Hell are you!"

Our job was to inspect & instruct the Reserves but it was really our job train them for the day that they might be called upon to serve on active duty & deploy for a mission any where in the world. Some times I felt that we were there to make'em look good because they got all the credit & if things were screwed up well...us regulars go all the blame. We never did get reconized for all we did but we made'em look good. During Vietnam it was a place to serve out your military obligation for what ever reasons individuals had.Some had other obligations and need to be home,weather it be College,a job or a wife,kids or other family that needed them.Some had been on active duty & just wanted to keep thier hand in but I'd like to think it was becauses they to were and are Marines & not just week-end worriers. During our history The Marine Corps Reserve has saved the war i.e. in the Korean War & today in two wars& when called to serve,they march towards the sounds of the battle. Just for info.there was a time when the USMCR would let any prior service member from Any branch of service,that had served hornorably,join the USMCR ranks,Without going thru Marine Corps Boot Camp.( I thought that to be &.$.)I found out that the unit had a MGySgt that never went to boot camp but in those days I'm told that the early training took place at the reserve unit.He turned out to be a Korean War Hero.It really poped my bubble when I learned that Most members of The Marine Corps Band,"The Presidents Own" are mostly civilians under contract that are not required to go to Boot Camp & start out with E-6 pay and ware the uniform.To me they are not real Marines. But then again the Reserves received 4days pay for a 2day drill and you might get a half a days work out of them but that was before Captain Dan Buckle,an old Mustanger & China Marine took charge.The "Skipper"is 80 years old now & retired a Major,living in the North Western Mountains of North Carolina (a place very near what we call Mayberry RFD).I stay in touch with him.Funny how some of your worse moments turn out to be some of your fondest memories.

Running the indoor range at the reserve center in Lexington and the KD (known distance) rifle range at Ft Knox,Ky.The qulification and fam fire of 45cal pistol,M16's,M60's,and the Rememington 870 riot shotguns.We were sending Detachments of USMCR to Ft Knox to ride shot gun with the Army's MP's.We would send several Dets. to different Summer Camp sites to include CAX's at 29 Palms,Ca.We were involved in exercise "Nifty Nugget" which was a total reserve recall nation wide,mobilazation drills (MORTs,)plus the regular drill week-end.Our reserves were always comming or going or drilling,always training.The I&I Staff was always there. 3/9 Helo down in the Philipines.The loss of PFC DILLON while crossing a river on a training exercise in Korea. The Climb to the top of Mt. Fuji,Japan and the winter in KOREA. When we were back at base camp in the tents,luck enough to sleep in a cot instead of on the ground as we did in the field a Shoot'n,Move'n & Communicating.We got Hot Chow...Chow that would Freeze to your mess kit before you could get it ate but it sure beat C-rations.

This was an additional duty for me and I highly encouraged the really good Fox Battery Marines to "Extend" vice re-up. In order stay with the unit and think about re-enlisting once they got back to 1st or 2d Division because as you know The Third Mar. Div. was different from state side duty at the time.I enjoyed explaining all the pro's and con's along with thier benifits ect...reguardless if the stayed or got out,of course there were some that had no chioce.

I recruited 170 Plus applicants for enlistment during my 3 years on production .All of them made it home althought not all of them made it thru thier enlistment.I spent the 4th Year on recruiting as The AFEES LAISON SNCOIC in Milwaukee and for the entire state of Wisconsin & the U.P of Mich. All applicants went thru me,Male,Female,Regular,Reserve,or Officer Canadiates.After testing,physicals & classification they were either sworn in to The Marine Corps sent to Quantico,San Diego or Paris Island,S.C. or in many cases they were sent back home if found unqualifed due to thier physical & mental test results, background check or drug test results.

When a young Marine came Home. I was so Proud of the Marines that I put into our beloved Corps.I still stay in contact with some of my Marines from Wisconsin & They All still love thier recruiter.

I did NOT lie to the Commanding Officer but I did cover for another Marine and I took the hit,so be it.I have no respect for the Marine that told me to lie and none for the one I covered for...With much respect for the Maj.,Lt,and myself.We all did what we had to do and what we thought was right at the time.That's what really matters. I can live with a mistake, I can Not live with out integrity & mutual respect. You Know you are getting Old when your former Lt.was The Commanding General of The First Marine Division that lead the Marines on the 21st of March 2003,Major General James N. MATTIS said this to his Marines,"For the mission's sake,our countrys sake,and the sake of the men who carried the division's colors in past battles-who fought for life and never lost thier nerve-carry out your mission and keep your honor clean.Demonstrate to the world there is " No Better Friend,No Worse Enemy'than a U.S.Marine." General I can only wish that I had been there with you Sir,and with my Marines.Thank you Sir,for taking care of them & fighting this war. Col.CAMP told me that you knew how to do both,his words.

WHEN OUR POW's CAME HOME, MANY WERE AT THE NAVAL HOSPITAL IN PHILLY. WE HAD A PARTYs AT OUR MARINE CLUB "TUN TAVERN II" DRINKING AND DANCING TO THE 70's. On my 21st Birthday the celebration carried over from The Club to my apartment off base so all the off duty watches/Marines could join in the party. I remember,the party went on for a couple days. When I was promoted to Sgt and transfered from the Brig Section to the Cross Country Chaser Section as a Federal Prisoner Escort Detail. Of course there was a wetting down of the stripes at The Club, TUN TAVERN II that was named after "where it all began" in 1775 TUN TAVERN & Again when I re-enlisted for 6. Yea, you guessed it, another party,this time its a fare well.

Prison Drafts from the U.S. Naval Ship Yard in Philly by bus to McGuire AFB in NJ were we would meet up with Marine Military Police from Brooklyn,Ny.with all Brig Rats on board we lifted off and headed for Chicago Great Lakes to pick up and swap out East coast/West coast prisoner. Flew into Midway Airport to met up with Marine guards from Great Lakes Naval Station and headed to Marine Corps Air Station,Cherry Point,NC. Pleasent surprise when I run into Capt.STANISLAO (one of my Company Commaders from 3/6) at the Marine Corps Supply Activity in downtown Philly.He made one call to The Adjdant that got me promated to Sgt. I can not forget China Town near downtown, Center City in Philly.I went back to Philly in 2000 for The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation Marine Corps Birthday Ball and being Single had a Re-Union with my French Canadian,former Navy girlfriend & ship-mate.By the way, she along with another female Sailor were the First Females to be assigned on baord a ship,true Story.Check out The Philidelphia Enquire 1972-1973. They were on board The USS Blue Ridge. Her first ship,My last ship. I sent her a picture of me and the Blue Ridge while in the port of Hong Kong (1983-1984) Any way the Headquarters building for The 4th Marine Corps District is still there which by the way was the first Hq for the Marine Corps and Officer Training.Our ole club "Tun's Tavern II along with the Barrack,Barber Shop,Cobbler Shop & Mess Hall has been bull dozed over but the Enlisted Women of The Navy's old barracks (wave cage) is still there. We had fun in Philly...lots of history.

When my Chevrons and NCO (Blood Stripes) got pinned on,I could hardly walk and could not lift my arms to reach for my promotion warrent. The night compass march at the jungle operations training center in Ft. Sherman,Panama.(official member of The Royal Order of The Black Palm).Bad weather in Turkey, during exercise "Deep Furrow ",the Helos could not resupply or take us out and back to the ship.Any time they did come in stand by to...Eat Dirt & Dust, litteraly.By then we were using the new PRC-77'S & Ky-38's which ment more than twice the weight plus batteries BA-4386's. I hated it to have to give up my Poggie Rope when I left The Unit. Damn Proud to have served with The Sixth Marines.

When we were in the Carib. I was on the USS LA SALLE LPD3,USS LORAINE COUNTY & USS GRANT COUNTY LST' 1177 & 1174.At one time or another I was the radio man for all the line company commanders.Prior to that I was on the F.O. team.The BN Cmdrs operator in the Med while on Exercise "Deep Furrow"in Turkey.We were on board the USS GuadalCanal LPH 7 in the Med.I remember 3/6 actual's call sign,"Muscel Bound" back in the time we operating in the clear and using the old PRC-25's.I was on exercises Exotic Dancer and Solid Shield.The BLT flew to Quonset Point,Rhode Island and stood by for civil support for any civil disturbance during the trials of eight Black Panther members charged in connection of the murder of an alleged "informer", the trials being held in New Haven,Conn. We were also on 6 hr Air Alert for civil disturbance in Washington,DC. I remeber the area E.M.CLUB & Swoop Circle. I love North Carolina and Camp Lejeune. Sand fleas and all.

Remembering The First African American Marines that went thru Boot Camp in what was Montford Point,North Carolina.The Camp Sits next to the town of Jacksonville,North Carolina and ajacent to Camp Lejeune.This was directed by President Franklin ROOSEVELT on the 25th of June 1941.Two (2) of those Black Marines later rose to the rank of Sergeant Major,the highest enlisted rank in The Marine Corps. SgtMaj.Edgar R. HUFF and Sgt.Maj Gilbert H. JOHNSON for whom Montford Point was re-named to Camp Johnson.That is were I went thru The NCO Academy. On the left as you enter the Gate of Camp Johnson is a North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. Since I did not enlist in The Great State of North Carolina and have not lived there for a total of 10 years,nor live there now,I am Not entitled to be burried there.That was my first choice.I wanted to be with my Marines. On the right side of the gate is The Beirut Memorial in memory of the 241 Marines that "Came in Peace" and gave thier all on 23 October 1983. There is a place reserved to the right for a Vietnam Memorial.The Town of Jacksonville planted 241 Bartlet Pear Trees in the Medium between there and the Main Gate of Camp Lejeune. I often wonder why my name is not on one of those walls...I would glady change places...For Greater Love has no man than to lay down his life for another. In 1971 during Exercise " Deep Furrow " in the Med. Helo landings in Turkey . Opperated apx. 200 miles from what is now Georgia (former) U.S.S.R. with 3/6 as The Bn Cmdrs Radio Operator.

When we were Not on Water Hours & did not have to take a Navy Shower with Saltwater.Pulled into Port for resupply of Freashwater,Milk,real eggs ect...vice powered.
Worst Moment
Radio Watch on the Upper Deck when she was Rock'n & a Roll'n in Heavy Seas,the Heads would Flood.We were on Water Hours because using Salt water were unable to make enough Freashwater while underway.

My First Ship. Made my first Beach Assult on to Onslow Beach,Camp Lejeune,North Carolina. Exercise "Exotic Dancer" Before being Deployed to The Caribbean. The USS La Salle was LPD-3 and has been redesigated as AGF-3 is deployed in The Gulf as a Command Ship. She's painted White in order to help reflect some ot the heat,she's know as "The Great White Ghost".

Being a T.J.Mexico Border Raider and Liberty in San Diego. Graduation from the Field Radio Operators Course and getting to pick my next duty station. Camp Lejeune,North Carolina (Swamp La Goon,North Kackalackie) At least it was East Coast and I could Swoop Home.
Worst Moment
Being new to The Corps...not knowing that Orders to 2nd Marine Division that I'd end up in The Grunts (infantry) Radio Operator.When I could have chose Cherry Point,North Carolina (Marine Corps Air Wing) Swing with the Wing.Or 2d Force Service Suport Group also Camp Lejeune...ended up retiring from there...FSSG was my worse tour...just one of the reasons I decided to pull The Pin.

I joined The Marines on The Buddy Plan with Daniel R.BASLER.He to was from Richmond,Indiana and was also born in Cincinati.BASLER served as a Rifleman with Kilo Company Third Battalion,Seventh Marine Regiment,Third Marine Division in Vietnam.Also there was Arlie "DeWayne" WHISENHUNT USMC"R"(Reserve)Dewayne could not keep from smiling all the way thru boot camp,I often wondered why and later found out the he went back to Abilene,Tx as a Motor Transportation Reservist having completed his six months of active duty and did six years in The Reserves one week-end a month and two weeks in the summer.Un-like Basler who singed up for a two year hitch and me for four years,now I know why he was laughing. I also want to mention another "Best Friend" even though I could not convince him to join The Marines with me.He is Army Specialist 5 Gerald Vincent VAN WINKLE,Regular U.S. Army.He was also born in Cincinnati and his family is origanally from Kentucky,as were mine.Gerald graduated with The Class of 1969. The last time I saw Gerald was in October 1969 at Centerl Baptist Church.We were both home on Boot Camp Leave,I have a picture of us in uniform in front of the church.By the way that was the last time I'd see Barbara my New Bride until 32 years later but that's another story***see Worse Moment below.

Two (2) years passed and Dan BASLER returned from Vietnam and we had a reunion at Camp Lejeune after he had also done a 6 month tour of duty in Cuba.I drove him back home to Indiana after he was discharged from active duty....Advance 20 yrs,I got out and came back to Richmond. Sometime later Basler and I were able to attend a Marine Corps Birthday Ball at The Gault House in Louisville,Ky.I presented Basler with a copy of our Original Orders that started our adventure and life in The Marine Corps which took us in different directions,We stay in touch to this day.

When ever "Mad Man" SSgt McBROOM (our D.I.)had the duty. One D.I. always plays the bad guy,it's all part of "the game" the game is also very physically demanding in addition to mentally,which is all part of Boot Camp and the making of a Marine. **Continued from Best Friends**...two years later in the fall of 1971 while serving on The USS.GUADALCANAL LPH-7 (A HELICOPTER CARRIER)in the middle of The Mediterranean Sea,I wrote a letter to My Best Friend,Spc.5 Gerald Viencent VAN WINKLE (R.A.) Charlie Company 159th Batallion of the 101's Air Bourne Division Vietnam...The Letter was returned to me while I was still at sea,it was sometime in October 1971. I will "Never Forget" it was from The Department of The Army informing me that My Best Fried had been killed on 18 September 1971...I hold on to that letter & have a Memorial both inside and outside my house in mememory of My Best Friend & My Son both named Gerald and both only with us in Spirit..Continued below **"Other Memories"**

We were in The Receiving Barracks,in the process of forming from the 3rd of July until our pltoon was picked up.Our Training Commenced on the 14th of July 1969. Fourty (40%) of our Original Pltoon of eighty (80)recruits Graduated from Boot Camp on (9/11)& were called Marines for the first time.How ironic...Not only did I arrive on the early morning of The 4th of July...We Graduated on September,11,1969. While in Boot Camp...America,"Landed On The Moon"...I thought I was "On The Moon"...the minute I stepped foot onto "The Yellow Foot Prints" the first step to becoming a UNITED STATES Marine but first The Marine Corps had to tear us down and start the rebuilding process,not only in Body but also in Mind and Spirit."Once a Marine,Always a MARINE! You learn what "Semper Fidelis" means,which is Latin for Our Motto,"Always Faithful" Faithful to GOD,Country,and Corps. **Continued from Worse Memories"** If you are ever in Richmond,Indiana,There is a Memorial Brick for Gerald V.VanWinkle at The Senior High School. Or you can visit Gerald,he is at rest in The Earlham Cemetery,Located next to Earlham College,just West of our High School,on US Hwy 40. His stone is Black Granite (just like "The Wall") and it states,"For Those That Never Fought Will Never Know What Freedom Is." Gerald will Always Be Remembered in a place called (LZ)Landing Zone,"White Water." It's located in The White Water Valley Gorge,on The White Water River,just down the hill from our High School and up stream.Gerald's name along with all the others from Wayne County, Indiana that were lost to The Vietnam War are listed on "The Wall" along side of the Peaceful White Water River. When in Washington,D.C. be sure to see "The Vietnam Wall" you will find Gerald,left of center,on panel 2W-line 19. Until we meet again,"On The High Ground" I will Continue to Carry On. Semper Fi. Camp Pendelton was on fire and the animals would come down from the hills & into our Qunset Hut Head for water. Being packed into the cattle cars like sardines.
