Sub Unit 1 was later renamed Company A, Marine Support Battalion when the flag moved from Ft. Meade, MD in 1995.

Nick Buono. We joined on the buddy plan. We went downtown intending to join the Navy but the only day we were both out of school and off work together happened to be a holiday. Back then it was Washington's Birthday. We stumbled around the building until we saw light coming from an office down the hall. As we approached the office, the light suddenly went out and the hallway got dark. We looked up and there was a man standing in the doorway. It seemed to us that he was 10 feet tall. He had shoulders the width of the doorway, a flat top haircut, ribbons from his chin halfway down his chest, and a cigar tucked into the corner of his mouth. He looked down at us and growled "What the f..k are you boys doing up here?" We told him that we were looking for the Navy recruiting office and asked if he could help us. He said "F..K them squids, come in here." Seven days later we were both standing on the yellow foot prints at MCRD. Thanks GySgt Paul Howell wherever you are!!
