Reflection from Sgt Melvin E (Mel) Irvin: Sep 12, 2013

I served with what was then known as First Engineer Batttalion in Chu Lai, RVN from 2/1/66 until sometime in October 1966.  I was in the Motor Transport platoon and we had M54 Dump Trucks (5 Ton), M54 Cargo Trucks (5 ton) as well as jeeps, Mighty Mights, Mules and Low Bed Trucks for hauling the heavy equipment of the Heavy Equipment Platoon.  While there I served in one major operation where two or three of our members were wounded by an M79 Grenade Launcher Round someone inadvertently had thrown into an empty C-Ration Case and then into a fire we had made to burn garbage.  One was severely wounded and they were air lifted out.  I would spend a fair amount of time attached to an infantry company out on what we called the Chu Lai Peninsula.  The peninsula had been a VC stronghold and a grunt company was permanently placed out there to hold the clear the peninsula.  Usually a couple of 1st Engineer Combat Engineers were there also as they had to clear the road every day looking for mines.
Our Platoon Sergeant was Master Sgt John Briggs and our Platoon Leader was a Lt. Welbourn.  Other than the day to day stuff like getting sniped at while building bridges and dirt roads, it was rather mundane.  I was the Battalion Dispatcher for some of the time--a cushy job.  One incident involved a 20-year old member of the Heavy Equipment Platoon who got into a fight with a fellow platoon member and shot him in the stomach with an M-14.  Lt. Burch, a fabulous Mustanger, was their Platoon Leader and he walked into it while coming back from chow and grabbed the rifle out of the shooter's hands while the shooter was screaming he would shoot if they came near him. Mr. Burch was one of the most gutsy men I have ever known.  I understand the shooter received 20 years of hard labor at Leavenworth.  Chu Lai was an area, not a town so the closest city was Danang, some 57 miles north on Highway (and boy do I use that term loosely here) north of Chu Lai.  We once had a long convoy to Danang to get supplies. We were accompanied by a full rifle company, a Huey gun ship and a Skyhawk fighter for security.  Fortunately the trip to and from was uneventful.

I am not sure if this is the kind of the stuff you are looking for, but I thought I would at least respond.  All of this occurred in 1966.  The Operation was in July as I recall, but I am not sure.  My DD214 does not list it.  By the way, I do have the Unit Diary I obtained from the Military Service Center if you need it.  You probably already have obtained it.

Anyway, thank you so much for your service.  It is greatly appreciated by us old guys.

Semper fi,

Mel Irvin
