World War II veteran gets special visit from Marines in Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA — Somewhere between boyhood and manhood, Alex Papczynski decided he wanted to serve his country.
As required, he got his father's permission to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17 and ultimately fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
And while he stayed in the military for just four years, Papczynski took away a lifetime of memories — some good, some not — many of which he's shared with his wife Mary and their seven children over the years.
"We heard his Marine stories all our lives," his daughter, Sandra Haws, said. "And he always told my brother, when he dies, he wants to have Marines there."
Papczynski is 84 now and suffers from congestive heart failure.
Rather than wait for some Marine Corps brothers to come to his final services, why not ask them to visit him now? Haws thought.
So, two days after her dad was admitted to the hospital, she began e-mailing Marine Corps groups asking if they'd consider stopping by.
Within a day or so, she heard from Rich Mullins, the local Marine Corps League commandant.
Today, Mullins came out with 1st Sgt. Sam Alameda to pay Papczynski an unannounced visit.
The pair walked into his hospital room at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center and presented him with a Marine Corps coin and a smiling picture of himself during his service days.
Papczynski, who was with the III Amphibious Corps, shared stories with the Marines and told them about how throughout the years, he's made a point of getting together with some of the men he served with.
"At our reunion, I didn't see old men," he told them of the last time he saw his friends. "I saw 18-, 19-, 20-year-olds, and I wondered if they thought that (same thing) about me."
Mullins said he doesn't get many requests similar to the one from Papczynski's family.
"I'd be glad to do it for others, though," he said.
As for Papczynski, he thanked his military brothers for their consideration and shook their hands one last time.
"I'm glad I came (to the hospital) now," he said a bit tearfully, but smiling.
