Best Friends Senior Drill Instructor was SSgt. Joseph C. CHILES. Plt. 286 was his first as the 'Senior' and under his leadership our Platoon took every award for every competition our Series engaged in except for one! We kicked ass as did our Senior and his ADS's.
Best Moment Earning Meritorious PFC for 'High Shooter' and for keeping my shit together during boot camp serving as: Key Private; Platoon Artist; Assistant Scribe.
Worst Moment While with the nearly 90 or so recruites in the old white wooden receiving barracks being 'processed' for the few days while awaiting being picked-up by our Drill Instructors for my Platoon to begin training, a NCO called for all privates who had been arrested or convicted of a crime to stand up; I was stunned to see that I was one of the 3 or 4 who remained in our seats! I learned that my Series had multiple recruuites who had served time in State Prisons, and one short black private in the next platoon had been convicted of manslaughter. When I overheard my Senior DI ask him why he killed a man, the recruit answered: "Because he slapped me sir!" The DI's all laughed and said that they would make sure that when they needed to 'correct' him they would do something other than 'slap' him!!!
Instructors SSGT. Joseph C. CHILES, Senior D.I.; SGT. Henry SMALLS, ADI; SGT. PARSONS, ADI; and SGT. MOHLER, ADI (who was replaced by SGT. PARSONS)
Other Memories It was an amazing Platoon lead by a fantastic Senior DI; I was: one of three 'House Mice'; Platoon 'Artist'; Platoon 'Key Private.' Our Platoon was First in our Series in all Competitions except one.
