On March 8, 1965, The USS Henrico, Union, and Vancouver, carrying the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade under Brig. Gen. Frederick J. Karch, take up station 4,000 yards off Red Beach Two, north of Da Nang.
First ashore was the Battalion Landing Team 3/9, which arrived on the beach at 8:15 a.m. Wearing full battle gear and carrying M-14s, the Marines were met by sightseers, South Vietnamese officers, Vietnamese girls with leis, and four American soldiers with a large sign stating: "Welcome, Gallant Marines." Gen. William Westmoreland, senior U.S. military commander in Saigon, was reportedly "appalled" at the spectacle because he had hoped that the Marines could land without any fanfare. Within two hours, Battalion Landing Team 1/3 began landing at Da Nang air base. This began the build up of the Da Nang facilties.
The final U.S. ground combat operations in Vietnam ceased on 13 August 1972, when a residual force of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade stood down in �?à Nẵng. In early February 1968 during the TET offensive I was in my first fire fight in Hai Van Pass. We were in a convoy going north to Hue when Charlie initiated an ambush with a command detonated box mine. Seconds after the explosion and resulting small arms fire the word was passed down the convoy for the corpsman to move forward, there were casualties. On the run from the middle of the convoy I came around a bend in the road into the field of fire. I treated 7 casualties that day, 2 KIA (Lcpl Halfman, LCpl Maybury) 5 WIA (SSgt. John Johnson...) The second Marine I treated had received a major portion of the shrapnel to his upper body resulting in many sucking chest wounds. This Marine was in the middle of the road and we were taking heavy small arms and machine-gun fire from the top of the cliff overlooking the road. As I was treating the Marine the majority of the small arms fire was directed toward me as I tried to apply dressings to the many wounds. Realizing that I was highly exposed I covered the Marine with my body as I tried to treat him. As the small arms fire became more intense on my position I knew I need to Di Di Mau (spelling) out of there. The Gunny behind the second vehicle yelled ?Docs in trouble!? and in an instant the fire fight intensified and the Gunny ran from cover to my position noticing that I was struggling in the attempt to get the Marine to cover as he outweighed my 145 pounds by at least 80 pounds. We got him to cover although he died before the MED EVAC arrived. After the fire fight and the area secured we were going back to Danang since the pass was closed. I started to think about the ambush and realized that when the Gunny yelled of my predicament all the Marines engaged in the fire fight had exposed themselves from their positions and proceeded to gain fire superiority by a heavy volume of fire on the enemy positions. This and the Gunny?s action saved my life.

With the beginning of the Tet Offensive on January 30, 1968, the Vietnamese lunar New Year (Vietnamese: Tết Nguyên Đán) large conventional American forces had been committed to combat upon Vietnamese soil for almost three years. Passing through the city of Huế, Highway One was an important supply line for ARVN, US and allied forces from the coastal city of Đà Nẵng to the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). It also provided access to the Perfume River (Vietnamese: Sông Hương or Hương Giang) at the point the river ran through Huế, dividing the city into northern and southern areas. Huế was also a base for United States Navy supply boats. Considering its logistical value and its proximity to the DMZ (only 50 kilometres (31 mi)), Huế should have been well-defended, fortified, and prepared for any communist attack.
However, the city had few fortifications and was poorly defended. The South Vietnamese and U.S. forces were completely unprepared when the North Vietnamese army and Viet Cong failed to observe the promised Tet Truce. Instead, the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army launched a massive assault throughout South Vietnam, attacking hundreds of military targets and population centers across the country, among them the city of Huế.
The North Vietnamese forces rapidly occupied most of the city. Over the next month they were gradually driven out during intense house-to-house fighting led by the Marines. In the end, although the Allies declared a military victory, the city of Huế was virtually destroyed and more than 5000 civilians were killed (2,800 of them executed by the PAVN and Viet Cong according to the South Vietnamese government). The North Vietnamese forces lost an estimated 1,042 to 5,000 killed, while Allied forces lost 668 dead and 3,707 wounded. Mike company from the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines moved up a ridge called Hill 1192, they wandered into an NVA base camp and were shot to pieces with 14 killed and dozens wounded. Three helicopters were shot down attempting to rescue wounded Marines. The surviving marines remained pinned down and bleeding for several days until rescued by another company. As units went up the treacherous Hai Van Pass (Hill 1192), and straight into a North Vietnamese Army training base camp. On 19 October 1965. three VC regiments totaling 6,000 men attacked a Civil Irregular Defense Group (CIDG) - U.S. Special Forces at Plei Me, near the entrance to the Ia Drang Valley, in what purported to be the start of a thrust to cut the country in half.
With the assistance of massive air strikes, elements of the newly arrived 1st Cavalry Division thwarted the enemy in a battle that lasted nearly a month and included several engagements. The Ia Drang Valley action was the costliest in terms of casualties to date.
