Buddies I'll Remember Most
29 of 90
from  1965-1966, 0311, USS Monrovia (APA-31)  album
This picture was probably taken in Sardinia, Italy during one of our training stops. I said a few things regarding Pete elsewhere in this profile, but I need to mention something here about Mozee. I wasn't sure about his first name. We all called him by his last name, Mozee or we called him Cherry. It wasn't until the Med cruise that I found out why. He was in my fire team and we always kidded around with each other. On the Med cruise to pass the time, while crossing the big pond, one of the Marines who had some boxing experience, started a Marine boxing team. I'd never boxed, so I thought it was a good opportunity to learn. The coach wanted to see what levels we were at, so he paired us up by size. Cherry and I were paired together. When we squared off, I had no strategy, didn't know what I was doing. All I know is within about 2 minutes, Cherry explained his nick name in no uncertain terms without uttering a word. He was all action, he was a master with the gloves on and had no trouble proving it when he blackened not one eye, but both my eyes inside of 2 minutes. After that experience, I called him Mister Mozee. After my boxing lesson, Mr. Mozee confessed to the coach that he had boxed Golden Gloves for awhile prior to joining the Marines. Knowing that, didn't help my face much, but it made me feel better inside to know that a famed Golden Gloves Boxer cleaned my clock instead of just any Joe off the street.
