Half my cooks and myself went forward on the ground assult in the Kuwait. The first day was alot of stop and go and friendly artillery fire, day two the tank battle in the Al Walhua Oil fields. When we got close to the Kuwait International Airport(KIA) we came across a very large deep hole, small peices of buildings were all over the place. Once at the (KIA) we had sniper fire for a short period. That night we had a Scud Missle come in 7 click of our position. My troops and I did the same thing the grunt did and at (KIA) they cooked a meal. It turned out being the determining factor for me to receive the (NAM) along with a few of my other cooks. I was very proud of my mens performance, we had already been together for 2 to 3 years. My second family, I called them my boys in a respectful way. We all lookout for each other. I remember hearing Lou Armstrong sing "Its a Bueaiful World" that cold crisp morning the wind changed direction and we could see the sun. It was a great day to be alive. We had a Heros welcome home and Thank God our Viet Nam veterans were able to join us and be reconized after so many years. The Viet Nam Vet who gave me a case of Bud and thanking me. I said "No Thank You, You didn't get this when you came home" We shook hands and gave each other a knowing look. I'm proud to say the Marine Corps operated at its very best of my whole career and I had been told by many old timers it would be that way. Most important all the B---S--- stopped. ... More

It is the largest Asia-Pacific military exercise held each year, and is among the largest multinational military exercise in which the United States participates.
Cobra Gold was first held in 1982. It served as military training exercise to improve coordination between the armed forces of the United States and Thailand in both hostile military and humanitarian efforts. It also had the goal of strengthening ties between the U.S. and Thailand, the oldest ally of the United States in the South Asia region. More recently, Cobra Gold has served a humanitarian mission, as military personnel deliver health care to the local Thai population, and as a testing ground for new battlefield technologies such as solar powered weaponry.
The United States has engaged in only a single, very minor military intervention in the Pacific area since the end of the Vietnam War, making it difficult to judge Cobra Gold's effectiveness in improving warfighting capabilities and coordination. Cobra Gold has, however, proven effective in improving coordinated military response to natural disasters.... More

''Gallant Eagle '86,'' a 10-day exercise testing U.S. forces under desert warfare conditions, wound down Saturday with a live-ammunition drill in the Mojave Desert, a spokesman said.
''There's a live-fire exercise going on right now in Twentynine Palms, and with the end of that, the exercise will stand down,'' said Air Force Maj. John Meyer, spokesman for the joint-service command post at March Air Force Base.
Although it would take several days to analyze the performance of thousands of Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force units, ''everyone generally feels happy and satisfied,'' Meyer said.
An Ohio Army private was killed and several others were injured, including a Georgia soldier whose right hand was nearly severed, during the exercise, but the total number of injuries during the exercise had not been tallied, he said.
Three men were killed in a helicopter crash July 10 during pre-exercise preparations, Meyer said.
The exercise, centered at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center here, 130 miles east of Los Angeles, was to test military personnel in a desert environment should they be called to action in the Middle East.
It was also a test to find out whether the services can be coordinated in one effort, said Marine Col. Bill Wydo.
During the maneuvers across hundreds of miles of California wasteland, troops fired live ammunition, coped with searing desert heat and learned how to fight by day and night.
The Air Force flew hundreds of missions from bases nationwide, and the Navy used container ships similar to those used by the British during the Falkland Islands war to support the massive exercise.
One of the Gallant Eagle highlights was Friday's successful night airborne assault by 742 Army paratroopers.
Safety has been stressed since the 1982 Gallant Eagle maneuver, when six paratroopers were killed and 150 were injured during a tactical drop in high winds.

The Combined Arms Exercise (CAX) program at the Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC), Twenty-nine Palms, California, is the Marine Corps' most advanced live-fire unit-level combined arms training program for ground and air fire support with maneuver at the tactical level. The Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command at Twentynine Palms is the premier live-fire base in the Marine Corps. Each year roughly one-third of the Fleet Marine Force and Marine Reserve units -- some 50,000 Marines in all -- participate in the base's training exercise program. It draws military personnel from all over the world for Combined Arms Exercises. A CAX involves several hundred Marines playing a war game against a fictitious enemy in which ground troops, armor, artillery, and aircraft engage enemy movements simultaneously.
The Marine Corps' Combined Arms Exercise (CAX) Training Program, developed to enable commanders and Marines to practice combat essentials skills, began in 1975 and allows for both brigade and battalion sized live-fire and maneuver exercises. The operating procedures permit Marines training at the Combat Center to maneuver both on foot and mounted on vehicles through live-ordnance impact areas. It further permits most air and ground weapons commonly found in a Marine Air Ground Task Force to be employed closely, in accordance with current doctrine in a combined arms setting.
The procedures taught at CAX (Combined Arms Exercise) are applicable across all terrain, not just desert warfare. Similar training is not possible aboard other bases. There are too many constraints," Taylor said, adding that "internal friction" such as broken equipment and loss of communications adds to the realism of CAX training. Marines can't effectively train for this set of target skills with MILES (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System) gear or force-on-force exercises. With new technology, services have become more inclined to depend heavily on non-live-fire target training. Combined arms skills are perishable and demand frequent sustainment.... More

After months of asking GySgt James to let us both run a grass week and we took the detail to the range. We worked them hard and poured all the knowledge we could to the troops. We kept things interesting and even in the afternoon sun we rapid fire drilled them took break and got back to it. From the first day on the range their first groups of rapid fire was excellent, in fact closer to Friday groups. Out of 200 shooters we had 2 Marksman, 7 Sharpshooters and the rest were Experts. Our thanks from Camp Hansen was they closed the range, washed down the targets and found no wrong doing on anyones part. They just could not beleive a couple of Cpl's could do that good of a job. Don and I were also, sent down to Camp Hansen to work a week on their range. They put us at the center of the line, like all eyes were on us. We noticed our shooters did not know how to correctly move their elevation or windage. We were talking about how screwed-up these shooters were when a SSgt. came up and asked what our problem was with the shooters. So we told him and he said he had gave the class. Since we were short, salty and cocky we told him in short order how screwed-up his class was! He went back to GySgt James who was there that week too and told him what we had said to him. He agree we were a bit salty but, we were the most knowledgeable coaches he had and he would lean from us if he took the time. The Gunny came back to us and told us to clean-up our act and do what we could do to help the SSgt
