UTM grid reference is BS735474

On the 22 of November, the 3d Battalion was committed in response to a request by the ARVN to reinforce the 37th Ranger Battalion on Nui Tho, Hill 74, in the Mo Duc District of Quang Ngai Province which was under attack by a large VC force that had penetrated the defences. In the early morning hours of the 23rd, as the Marines approached a cave the VC who had been hiding inside threw several grenades and opened up with rifle fire at the men who were beginning a search. SSgt Benavente was hit and killed as a result of a gunshot wound to the back of his head
