Sgt. Dirk Robert Abbas volunteered for service on 14 February 1951. He had boot training Camp Pendleton, California.

Served with Sub Unit 1, Hq Company, FMF, Camp Pendleton July-January (1951-2), (with an MOS 0231), as the Amphibious Reconnaissance Platoon, Hq. Company, FMF, Pacific Troops, Camp Pendleton, California. Embarked aboard the USS Perch (ASSP-313) from San Diego to overseas TDY (September 1951).  Note:  The USS Perch became a transport submarine at the beginning of the Korean War.

In June 1951, he volunteered for submarine duty and trained on the U.S.S. Perch until November when he returned home for Christmas.

After the holidays he was placed on the 21st Replacement draft

He was assigned to the Reconnaissance Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division. (He left for Korea on 17 June, and arrived on 5 July 1952 with MOS 231. )

He was killed in west central Korea on 6 October 1952.
