Last Known Activity
George Lewis Elgin entered the Marine Corps 23 April, 1944 from Indianola, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. 1-11 July, 1944 on furlough. 17 July, 1944 assigned to the 8th Training Battalion, 4th Infantry Training Regiment, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA.

11 November, 1944 assigned to the 27th Replacement Draft. 23 November, 1944 embarked the USAT Kota Agoeng at San Diego for movement overseas. 2 December, 1944 arrived at Hilo, Hawaii. There the 27th Replacement Draft was attached to Service Troops, 5th Marine Division.

7 January, 1945 embarked the USS Dickins (APA-161) at Hilo, Hawaii. 9 January, 1945 landing rehearsals at Maui and Koohalawe. 10-11 January, 1945 at Honolulu, Hawaii. 13-16 January, 1945 landing rehearsals at Maui. 19-27 January, 1945 at Honolulu, Hawaii. 5-7 February 1945 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 11-16 February 1945 in the Marianas.

19 February, 1945 off shore during the D-Day landings at Iwo Jima. During the battle landed and assigned as an infantry replacement in the 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division. Participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 15 March, 1945.

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Paul C and Mrs Nina Margaret Elgin, Route Four, Indianola, Iowa.

Originally buried in the 5th Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima.

22 April 1948 permanent Burial in Rock Island National Cemetery.
