In Vietnam he was serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 26 Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF. In the month of December the Battalion was operating under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 9th Marines in Quang Nam Province.  On December 5, a patrol in the vicinity of Cu Ban hamlet in the Duy Xuyen district was taken under enemy fire.  Wounded by the hostile enemy rifle fire, PFC Zane was evacuated to the Third Medical Battalion in DaNang where he died of the wounds.
