Prior to Korea, he served with Recon Company, 1st Marine Division, California. He joined this unit at Camp Pendleton, California in July 1949, MOS 302.  He participated in OPERATION MICOMEX 50A on the north coast of the Alaskan Peninsula in January-March of 1950.  {This was Minor Cold Weather Exercise (MICOWEX) 50A, which was an amphibious cold weather exercise held jointly with the U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy.}

In Korea, he served with Hq. Company/Recon Company, Hq. Battalion, 1st Marine Division.
