The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Sgt. Donald J. Lamar II, 23, of Fredericksburg, Va., died May 12 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Marine Corps Sgt. Donald James Lamar II, 23, of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Lamar was raised in Stafford County and was a 2004 graduate of Stafford High School, where he was a wrestler, baseball player and football player. After graduation, he joined the Marine Corps, and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.
Survivors include his wife, Stephanie Lamar, and daughter, Madison Anne; his parents, Donald J. and Coleen T. Lamar; his maternal grandmother, Pauline V. Lamar; two brothers, Stephen C. Lamar and Joseph M. Lamar; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 21, in Quantico National Cemetery. For all those attending the graveside service, the funeral procession will depart at noon from Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, to the cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to the scholarship fund set up for his daughter: "Madison in Memory of Sgt. Donald Lamar," Union First Market Bank. Donations may be made at any branch.
