Frederick, the son Frederick Kruger Jr. and Lillian M. Kruger of Wyoming MI enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 26, 1966 in Detroit MI. He arrived in Vietnam on September 23, 1967 and was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On March 18, during Operation WORTH a squad of Marines were moving along a ridge line between Hills 502 and 310 in Hieu Duc District when they were hit by a heavy volume of enemy automatic weapons fire that killed two Marines and wounded another. The squad quickly returned fire and maneuvered towards the hostile force that broke contact with their pursuers and melted into the thick undergrowth. Wounded and and evacuated to the Station Hospital NSA in Da Nang, LCpl Kruger died of gunshot wounds sustained as a result of hostile enemy rifle fire.
