He received Full Military Honors ______________ NAVY COMMENDATION MEDAL CITATION 29 & 30 APRIL 1975
For meritorious achievement as Assistant Noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge during the final evacuation of the United States Embassy, Saigon, Republic of Vietnam on 29 and 30 April 1975. Upon the Ambassador's request, Gunnery Sergeant Schlager chose Marines to assist in an attempt to open a vehicle gate in order that the Ambassador's car and escorts might proceed to the French Embassey on matters of utmost importance. The crowd at this gate was in excess of two thousand people among which were later reported to be an enemy detail in civilian clothing planning an attempt on the Ambassador's life. However, when the gates were partially opened, the onrush was such that Gunnery Sergeant Schlager had to personnally fight back the crowd until his Marines were pulled to safety. He remained outside until the gates were again locked and he was pulled within the compound. On 30 April 1975, the order was given for all Marines to withdraw to within the Chancery building and then proceed to the rooftop for extraction. During this time, the hostile crowd used a tank truck to smash the main doors and were quickly able to gain forcible entry to all floors of the Chancery. Because the access door to the final passage had a small window through which small-arms fire could be delivered, he volunteered to remain by the door to hold off the crowd with nonlethal deterrants until the final lift of Marines was achieved. Gunnery Sergeant Schlager's courage, initiative, and steadfast devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
